February Festivities and Features!

Team RSM Member Zach Johnson has a birthday coming up Feb. 24!

To help celebrate his big day, we wanted to share his recent feature in Golf Digest. Below is an excerpt from the articleMy Shot: Zach Johnson”:

“I PLAY A LOT OF H-O-R-S-E in the driveway with my oldest son, Will. He just turned 11. Obviously I’m better than he is, so I let him stay close. I’ll miss on purpose so I’m at H-O-R-S and he’s only at H-O. I can see on his face he thinks he’s got a chance. Then something happens to me. This competitive thing inside me kicks in, and I blitz him. I just can’t let him win. Maybe it’s an Iowa thing, but we’re not “everybody gets a trophy” people. Will’s a strong kid. His day will come soon enough.

WHEN I WATCH SPORTS ON TV—and I watch a lot—I’m always drawn to the 20-point underdog who keeps it close. At the NCAA basketball tournament, when a small school hangs in there but doesn’t quite pull it out, that’s the team my eyes go to at the end of the game. The TV cameras always focus on the winners, but I’m looking at the losing sideline and thinking, Nice job, guys. I don’t like losing, but there’s beauty in what comes out of it. As a golfer, everything I learned that led to my winning 12 PGA Tour events, including a couple of majors, came from losing.”

You can find the full feature here. We hope you have a great birthday, Zach!

Speaking of features, Team RSM Member, Davis Love III,  recently sat down with Golfweek at the PGA Merchandise Show to discuss a variety of topics, including golf fashion and the involvement the captain has in what the Ryder Cup uniforms will look like. Everything Old is New Again

There was some exciting news in the world of golf earlier this week. The R&A announced that golf's oldest championship, “The Open,” will return to the home of golf at St. Andrews in 2021 for the 150th edition of the championship.  Golf Channel provided additional information about the tournament and gave a shout-out to Team RSM Member Zach Johnson! See an excerpt below:

“The tournament will be held July 15-18, 2021. It will mark the first Open at St. Andrews since 2015, when Zach Johnson defeated Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman in a playoff to win his second career major and first claret jug.

Past Open champions at St. Andrews include Bobby Jones (1927), Sam Snead (1946), Jack Nicklaus (1970, 1978), Seve Ballesteros (1984), Nick Faldo (1990) and Tiger Woods (2000, 2005).”

Scholarships, Swinging and Singing

Earlier this week, Team RSM member Davis Love III was featured in a GoHeels article regarding exciting news – the University of North Carolina and The Rams Club named a men’s golf scholarship after him! The “Davis Love III Scholarship for Men’s Golf” was announced during a UNC men’s basketball game on Saturday. Below is an excerpt from the article:
Love played at Carolina from 1982-85 and has been one of the most accomplished golfers on the PGA Tour for three decades. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2017, won the PGA Championship in 1997, captained the United States' Ryder Cup winning team in 2016 and won 21 times on the PGA Tour.

It was an absolute thrill to have Davis back on campus and with the Carolina family," says UNC head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "Today's announcement marks a significant day for Carolina Golf. Davis is one of the most successful Tar Heels ever and he is also one of the most accomplished professional golfers to ever play the game. The Davis Love III scholarship will have a major impact on our program and student-athletes moving forward."

Over on the golf course, Team RSM Members Zach Johnson and Chris Kirk are playing in the Waste Management Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, Arizona. They will be joined by a few familiar faces, including past RSM Classic winners Austin Cook (2017), Mac Hughes (2016) and Robert Streb (2014). Below are their tee times for Thurs., Feb. 1:

Best of luck to each of them this week!
