Each year, about 1,200 volunteers give their time to help make The
McGladrey Classic a success. I, along with others who volunteer at this
PGA TOUR event, do so for the love of McGladrey and the game of
golf. These fall days of the tournament are fun-filled days for golf fans,
from sun up to sun down. I, like many others, was a repeat volunteer this year,
and I saw a lot of familiar, friendly faces on and around the course. Volunteering
at The McGladrey Classic is a wonderful experience. I saw first-hand the
abundance of community support and I was able to witness the behind-the-scenes
work of dedicated professionals who work year round to make this event a
success. As an employee of McGladrey, I was pleased to volunteer and
share my time to help make this event a success. Being able to give back
gives me such pride and volunteering at The McGladrey Classic allows me that
pleasure.
Nearly all of the volunteers you saw during this year’s tournament
put in long hours and demonstrated their dedication and love to the game of
golf. This was my fourth year as a volunteer so I was happy to re-enlist,
and I plan to volunteer again next year! It’s a fun way to give back and interact
with spectators and players, all while seeing great golf first-hand. And
as a volunteer, you know that your work is integral to the efficient running of
the tournament.
This year, I found myself with the volunteer assignment as a
marshal on the first hole. This was a great (and lucky)
assignment. I was surrounded by like-minded golf fans that were happy to
share the experience of being on the course at Sea Island. I learned a lot from
my fellow volunteers. They were an ambitious group, with phenomenal
dedication. Everyone was pulling multiple shifts, consecutive days in a
row. Volunteers came from all over the world, and many of us got up early each
morning to take advantage of the beautiful sunrises on the island. The sunsets
were spectacular, as well, making it well worth every ounce of energy we
put forth during the tournament. In fact, there is no better way to enjoy a
golf tournament, in my mind, than to volunteer, as it gives you a chance to see
all the action up-close and personal.
At McGladrey, we use the game of golf as a metaphor for the way we
do business with our clients. Just as a professional golfer’s caddy must truly
understand his or her game to provide them with the best possible advice, we
must truly understand our clients to provide them with the best possible
services to help them succeed. Not only do our clients and employees understand
the “power of being understood,” but I can vouch for the hundreds of volunteers
for The McGladrey Classic by saying that they whole-heartily understand this as
well!
Volunteering is a great way to give back when you have received so
much. If you’re interested in volunteering for next year’s McGladrey Classic,
you can learn more via the tournament website.
