Team McGladrey/McGladrey Classic News and Reminders

Team McGladrey Member Zach Johnson announced this week that he won’t be playing in the Ballantine’s Championship in South Korea as originally planned. (This would have been Zach’s first time playing overseas in more than two years.) In place of the Ballantine tournament, however, Zach has committed to play at the Wells Fargo Championship. While we’re sure golf fans in South Korea will miss seeing Zach there, there’s no doubt that this decision will  make our McGladrey team in Charlotte very happy! Do you plan to attend the Wells Fargo Championship? Who will you be pulling for to take home the trophy?

PGA TOUR players are hitting the course today at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans. Team McGladrey Member Chris DiMarco is in group #46 which tees off at 1 p.m.. Good luck, Chris! For those who can’t make it to the course, but might be following via their computers, be sure to check out the PGA TOUR’s Shot Tracker. The image to the left is a snap shot of what you’ll see.

This morning Team McGladrey Member Davis Love III was the topic of discussion for ‘Morning Drive’ on The Golf Channel. Hosts of ‘Morning Drive’ discussed which part of Davis’ game they would take for themselves. Check out the clip here.

With May right around the corner, it’s getting close to the time for new volunteers to register for the 2013 McGladrey Classic (Nov. 4-10)! While returning volunteers were given an opportunity to sign up early again this year, registration opens for ALL interested volunteers next Wed., May 1! New volunteers will be able to register for remaining volunteer spots and, for those who might be a little “late to the party,” add their names to the volunteer waiting list. Volunteer assignments are made on a first-come, first-serve basis, so you don’t want to wait too long to sign up! Find out more information here.

Our volunteers play a BIG role in the success of The McGladrey Classic. As a small way of thanking them, the tournament regularly spotlights selected volunteers online. This month, it’s the Rusmans who are, by far, the tournament’s longest travelled volunteers, joining us all the way from Guernsey! Find out more on the Rusmans and how they started volunteering at The McGladrey Classic.

Finally, taking place next Sat., May 4, is Demo Day Fore Charity. This will be your chance to experience what the pros experience at the state-of-the-art Learning Center Practice Facility at Sea Island Golf Club. We HIGHLY recommend checking this out if you will be in or around St. Simon’s Island. You can register here.

Hope to see you back here next week!

You’ve got the moves like… Zach Johnson’s caddie!

After an exciting week topped off with a thrilling playoff,  McGladrey sends a BIG congratulations to Adam Scott for winning the 2013 Masters! Scott is the first Australian to win the coveted green jacket, making his country proud.

The 2013 Masters was full of both the serious and the funny, which led to spirited discussions on and off the course. If you missed it, Team McGladrey Member Zach Johnson’s caddie broke out into a  “Bird-Man Dance” after Zach birdied No. 11 this past Saturday. We wonder if this will be the next “Tebowing” epidemic for the golf world. We would LOVE for you to share your “bird-man” moves with us!

Also this past Friday, there was a lot of discussion around Tiger Wood’s ball drop on the 15th hole. In a quick recap, Woods’ third shot hit the flagstick and rolled back off the green and into the water. He decided to return to the original spot of play and drop “as near as possible,” from where he played his third shot. The question that came into play was whether Woods dropped the ball as close to the original spot as he could have.  This stirred up a lot of discussion as to whether he should be disqualified from the tournament. In the end, Woods was penalized two strokes and remained in the competition.  What are your thoughts? Team McGladrey Member Zach Johnson shared his in this Des Moines Register article.

Following the Masters, it sure seemed as if Team McGladrey Member Davis Love III had a great time at MAM2013 (Monday After Masters). Davis tweeted this picture which included Dan Marino, Darius Rucker and others. Quite an impressive crew, huh?

The 45th RBC Heritage tournament begins today (Thurs., April 18) at the Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island. Zach is in group No. 5. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to make the trip to Hilton Head, but we WILL  be pulling for Zach from afar! Looking ahead to next week, Team McGladrey Member Chris DiMarco will be in New Orleans for the Zurich Classic (April 25-28). Go, Chris!

We are now officially less than 200 days from the 2013 McGladrey Classic (Nov. 4-10). We know these next 199 days are going to fly by. (Seems like just yesterday we were wrapping up the 2012 tournament.) If you are interested in playing alongside top PGA TOUR players in the Pro-Am, be sure to sign-up soon! With Wednesday’s Pro-Am already being sold out, there is now limited availability for Monday (Nov. 4). Find out more information here.

If spectating is more your thing, The McGladrey Classic offers premium hospitality packages. Whether you want to host clients or get a group of friends together, we offer private venues in a variety of sizes that feature the best views of the golf action.  Learn more about what is offered here.

Check back next week for more updates!

McGladrey Heading to The Masters!

In case you missed it, during a news conference yesterday morning, Augusta National Golf Club and Masters Tournament Chairman Billy Payne announced that the winner of The McGladrey Classic (and other October and November PGA TOUR events) will receive an invitation to play in the Masters beginning in 2014! That means that the winner of this year’s McGladrey Classic (Nov. 4 – 10) will play in the 2014 Masters! Team McGladrey Member, 20-time PGA TOUR winner and McGladrey Classic Host Davis Love III had this to say about the exciting news:

Every pro wants to be invited to play in the Masters. We thank Mr. Payne and the Masters team for providing our McGladrey Classic champion with the opportunity to play for the green jacket.

(Speaking of Davis, his birthday is this weekend – Sat., April 13. If you want to send him birthday wishes, you can do that here, and we’ll be sure to pass along your good wishes; or…if you’re on Twitter, you can reach out to him on Twitter. His handle: @Love3D.)

This is the second major announcement enhancing the potential strength of The McGladrey Classic player field. Late last year, the PGA TOUR decided to eliminate the Fall Series and position The McGladrey Classic and other former Fall Series events as the first tournaments of the 2013-2014 season. This change qualifies players for FedExCup points. Great news for The McGladrey Classic and tournament players – making an already great event even better! We’re looking forward to returning to Sea Island in November!

But we’re not waiting until then to put on our golf shoes! Play starts today at the 2013 Masters in Augusta, Georgia. (Shhh…don’t tell anyone but several of us here at McGladrey will be sneaking into the break room throughout the day to catch glimpses of the tournament and to cheer on Team McGladrey Member Zach Johnson who is in group #11!)

With the Masters being one of the most respected PGA TOUR tournaments, we’ve seen article after article about favorite memories and random facts about the tournament. Two of our favorite memories are when Team McGladrey Member Chris DiMarco went to a sudden-death playoff with Tiger Woods in 2005 and then in 2007, when Team McGladrey Member Zach Johnson WON the Masters. (This was Johnson’s first major championship and second PGA Tour victory.) Both were nail-biters and had us on the edge of our seats! What are your favorite Masters memories?

One of our favorite reads so far this season: Golf Digest’s “behind-the-scenes” memories from The Masters. Below is Zach Johnson’s section from the article:

Masters champions get to bring out one guest on Sunday, the eve of Masters week. Last year I invited my dad. We played with Fuzzy [Zoeller] and his buddy. My dad was very nervous; he really wanted to play well. He's about a 10-handicapper, and although he didn't say anything, I think he had a goal in mind of what he wanted to shoot. He parred the first hole and was off and running. He played well, Fuzzy was entertaining, and we had lunch in the clubhouse afterward. Watching my dad have a great day like he did was a thrill I'll never forget.

As a reminder, if you’re around St. Simon’s Island on Sat., April 27, be sure to attend the Rites of Spring for a chance to win a $10,000 cash prize! All proceeds will benefit Safe Harbor’s Children’s Center. Click here to find out more information.

Check back in next week for more news on Team McGladrey and the 2013 McGladrey Classic.

2013 McGladrey Classic in Full Swing

One of the most rewarding aspects of The McGladrey Classic is that it allows everyone involved to give something back to the community. During last year’s tournament, the Davis Love Foundation started a new program ‘Birdies Fore Love,’ presented by Nalley Buick-GMC. In the first year, the program generated $16,000 for local charities. (One hundred percent of the proceeds are donated to the participating charities). Due to the success of last year’s program, the Davis Love Foundation is inviting all interested children- and family-focused charities to participate. An introductory meeting is scheduled at the tournaments headquarters at Sea Island Golf Club on Mon., April 29. The deadline for charities to apply is Fri., May 10. To find out more information, please visit The McGladrey Classic website.

And speaking of The McGladrey Classic, can you believe the tournament is only 213 days away? We sure can’t (even though we’re already planning and looking forward to it)! Some news and events are in the works that we want to share:

Make plans to attend the Rites of Spring on April 27 for a chance to win a $10,000 cash prize! All proceeds benefit Safe Harbor Children’s Center.
Demo Day Fore Charity (May 4th) will be your chance to experience what the pros experience at the state-of-the-art Learning Center Practice Facility at Sea Island Golf Club

Follow along each month as Mark Love, executive director of the Davis Love Foundation, walks you through tips that will help you improve your score.

Sponsor Highlight: Harris Teeter, The McGladrey Classic volunteer program sponsor, has supported the tournament since its inception in 2010, and does so much for the community.

And what’s up with Team McGladrey? This week, Chris DiMarco is playing in the Valero Texas Open. He’s in group 15, which teed off today at 7:30 a.m., CT off of tee #10. Next week (April 11-14), Zach Johnson will be participating in the 2013 Masters in Augusta, Georgia. And Davis Love III is continuing to work hard at getting back on the course. If you miss seeing him out on the road, check out this PGA TOUR video of his top 10 shots (excluding majors).

With the Masters tournament around the corner, we want to tell our social media fans about ‘The Masters Contest’. Be sure to friend The McGladrey Classic Facebook page to you can join our “Major Series” contest throughout the year. It’s your chance to enjoy comradery with other fans and have a chance to win unique prizes. (Entries will open each Monday of a major).

Reminder: Registration for returning McGladrey Classic volunteers opened this past Monday (April 1 – no foolin’), and we surpassed our best ‘opening day’ total for returning volunteers! Thank you to the amazing volunteers who help make The McGladrey Classic such a success each year! If you’ve volunteered previously and want to help out again during this year’s tournament (Nov. 4 – 10), you’ll have the entire month of April to secure your spot on your returning committee or receive first request to be placed on a new committee. Register now to secure your spot! New volunteers will have an opportunity to register beginning May 1.

Check back next week as we provide more updates on the 2013 McGladrey Classic and Team McGladrey.
