Who’s Ready to Volunteer?

Last Friday (March 22), Sports Illustrated interviewed Team McGladrey Member Zach Johnson for an article about the secret to his consistency, and what keeps him up at night. In the Q&A, Zach discusses his wins, how he’s a short hitter, the 2012 Ryder Cup (and Team McGladrey Member and 2012 Ryder Cup Captain Davis Love III), and other topics. It’s definitely worth a read!

Last week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Sergio Garcia executed an AMAZING shot that we just had to highlight here on our blog. (Might even be one for the history books!) Sergio climbed 15 feet up an oak tree to play a shot back out to the fairway. We’ve never seen anything quite like it! If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out.

Teeing off today is the Shell Houston Open. While none of our Team McGladrey Members are playing in this tournament, we do have a vested interest in the outcome: extended McGladrey family members and previous McGladrey Classic winners Ben Crane (2011) and Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey (2012) are playing in the tournament. We’re pulling for you, guys!

Speaking of The McGladrey Classic, this year’s event (Nov. 4 -10) might seem as if it’s a long way away, but…it’ll be here before we know it. In fact, registration for returning volunteers begin Mon., April 1. If you’ve contributed to the success of the tournament before, you can register on the McGladrey Classic website (under the Volunteers section). Registration opens for new volunteers on Wed., May 1. Volunteering is a fun way for golf enthusiasts to get close to the action, while supporting an event that has already contributed more than $850,000 to national and local charitable organizations. We’d love to see you at Sea Island!

In closing, we wish our readers a wonderful and safe Easter weekend! (Wonder how many bunnies are sold this time of year?) “Hop” back by next week for more updates on Team McGladrey and the McGladrey Classic.

Looking Ahead with The McGladrey Classic

Team McGladrey Member Zach Johnson is continuing his tour of the Sunshine state this week as he competes in the 2013 Arnold Palmer Invitational which kicks off today (Thurs., March 21). And speaking of Arnold Palmer, earlier this week, “The King” made a $200,000 donation to the Central Florida Chapter of the First Tee. This establishes the Arnold Palmer Scholarship Fund, which supports the First Tee chapter’s five-year goal of impacting the lives of more than 4,500 Central Florida youth by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through golf. At McGladrey, we understand how important it is to give back to our local communities, especially those that benefit our children, and we applaud both Arnold and the First Tee for their commitment to kids and teens.
Last week, The McGladrey Classic shared a new blog post about why our tournament has moved to November 4-10 (from October in previous years), and the planning taking place for this year’s event. Here are a few highlights:

- Wednesday’s Pro-Am is already sold out, while limited spots remain for Monday’s Pro-Am.
- Registration for returning volunteers opens in April (That’s next month, can you believe it?), while new volunteers can register beginning in May.
- Youth Day is moving to Mon., Nov. 4 in conjunction with Community Day and will be open to the public, free of charge.
- Since last year’s Wiffle Ball Classic was such a success and the players enjoyed it so much, it has been moved a Tuesday this year (Nov. 5) so that the players – many of whom will be returning from Asia the week before The McGladrey Classic this year – can participate again this year.

Team McGladrey  Member Chris DiMarco is competing in the Tour’s Chitimacha Louisiana Open which kicks off today. Best of luck to Chris! Watch this video to hear what he has to say about the tournamentand other items.
Looking ahead, for those of you who will be near Sea Island Resort on Sat., May 4, we hope you’ll stop by for Demo Day Fore Charity! More details of this event are coming soon, so check back for that and more on Team McGladrey and the 2013 McGladrey Classic.

Busy Week for Team McGladrey

A sunny start to this Thursday morning for Team McGladrey Member Zach Johnson who is playing in the Tampa Bay Championship. If you plan on watching, Zach is part of group 46 and tees off at 1:30 p.m., ET. Best of luck to Zach! Next week, he’ll remain in Florida but travel to Orlando where he’ll play in the 2013 Arnold Palmer Invitational. You can bet we’ll be following him on the course!

At last week’s Cadillac Championship, Zach made an AMAZING shot we had to highlight here for our readers! In the second round, he made a 160-yard eagle! IMPRESSIVE! We’d love to see a few more of those out on the course in Florida, Zach!

Zach is also in the news for his decision to play in the Ballentine’s Championship in South Korea this May. He is the only American from the top 50 in the world ranking who has not played overseas in the past two years. As excited as we are here at McGladrey for Zach to have this opportunity, our McGladrey team in Charlotte is sad that he’ll miss the Wells Fargo Championship, which will be held in their hometown.

In beautiful Sea Island, home of The McGladrey Classic, Team McGladrey Member Davis Love III is in “full swing” one month following neck surgery. Crowne Sports Management posted this video of Davis out on the green. His swing is looking pretty good to us! What do YOU think?

And last but certainly not least, Team McGladrey Member Chris DiMarco joined John Brown earlier this week at Fox 35 for a newsroom putting contest. Check out the video to enjoy the friendly competition and  get to see Chris off the (real) course.
On a side note, we’d like to wish our readers a happy and safe St. Patrick’s Day this coming weekend! What are your plans to  celebrate? We might not be WEARING green, but we hope to be ON the green!

For more updates on Team McGladrey and the 2013 McGladrey Classic (Nov. 4-10), be sure to check back in next week.

The ‘Art’ of Golf and a Crane Takeover

We’re starting this week with a birthday shout out to 2011 McGladrey Classic Champion Ben Crane, who celebrated his “special day” this week, when he also took home the trophy from the Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 14 Night Golf Challenge.

And speaking of Ben, have you seen the latest “Golf Boys 2.OH” video? These boys are quite the rappers and, we must admit, this song is rather catchy! We always enjoy seeing what happens when Ben, Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler and Hunter Mahan get together. Wouldn’t it be fun if they all showed up at this year’s McGladrey Classic in November (4-10)?

In a different form of artistry, here’s an interesting bit of information that’ll appeal both golf and art lovers: The Philadelphia Museum of Art will be presenting The Art of Golf March 16 – July 7. The exhibition will display the “artistic representation of the sport,” and will coincide with the centennial of the U.S. Open Championship. If you’re in the neighborhood, you might want to check out this unique exhibit.

This week’s post wouldn’t be complete without an update on Team McGladrey and The McGladrey Classic. Team McGladrey Member Zach Johnson is in sunny Miami for the Cadillac Championship starting today. He’s in group 22 and tees off at 1:10pm. Zach will also be playing in the Tampa Bay Championship next week (March 14). Players have until 5 p.m. tomorrow (Fri., March 8) to commit. We’ll let you know if anymore Team McGladrey members join. This past Monday (March 4), the Davis Love Foundation hosted the 2013 McGladrey Classic Volunteer Chair kickoff event, where four outstanding volunteers from the 2012 McGladrey Classic were recognized and awarded with $1,000 each for their charity of their choice (courtesy of the Foundation and McGladrey). This was just a small way to thank those who help make The McGladrey Classic a success. We wouldn’t be able to put on such an amazing event without our volunteers. Our sincerest THANKS goes to all of the 1,200 volunteers who represent the best of Southern Hospitality each year at Sea Island!

Speaking of volunteers, if you’re interested in helping make the 2013 McGladrey Classic a success, keep an eye on the tournament’s  official website, as volunteer registration will be opening up soon!

Check back in next week as we provide more updates on Team McGladrey and the 2013 McGladrey Classic.
