A Kick-off Done Right…The 2011 McGladrey Classic is right around the corner

Throw in three popular PGA TOUR professionals, one of them last year’s champion, add McGladrey executives and some participants from the local Boys & Girls Clubs and Special Olympics, include 100+ invited guests and you have the makings of an extremely successful launch for the 2011 McGladrey Classic.

It was a standing room only crowd at Sea Island Resort on Monday, March, 28 as McGladrey and the Davis Love Foundation officially kicked off ticket sales and sponsorship opportunities for this year’s McGladrey Classic, being held October 10-16.

RSM McGladrey President CE Andrews, McGladrey & Pullen’s Managing Director Dave Scudder and Chief Marketing Officer Mark Audino were joined by Tournament host and Team McGladrey member Davis Love III, Team McGladrey member Zach Johnson and defending champion Heath Slocum to welcome the high octane community guests on hand to hear about what’s in store for this year’s tournament.

“Thank you, McGladrey, for doing a lot for golf and doing a lot for charity,” said Davis Love III during his opening remarks. “Last year’s success will be hard to beat, but we are going to keep going and keep doing more for the community and charities.”

“Going into Year Two, we remain committed and focused on making The McGladrey Classic the highlight of the entire PGA TOUR,” said C.E. Andrews. “We set out to host an event that provided our partners with a great opportunity to enhance relationships with our clients and prospects, and to strengthen our brand regionally, internationally, and everything in between. We accomplished that and then some.”

Andrews received a round of applause when he announced a new contest McGladrey will sponsor beginning in late May. Called “Caddie for Love,” one lucky golf enthusiast who wins the contest will get the chance to caddie for Davis during The McGladrey Classic Pro-Am on October 12. The winner will also be invited as an honored guest to the pairings party held at Davis’ home the night before. “Who wouldn’t want the chance to say they caddied for the next U.S. Ryder Cup captain,” Andrews asked.

The official “Caddie for Love” contest website will launch on May 23. You can follow the contest and vote for who you believe should be the final choice. Look for more information right here on the blog and on Twitter, Facebook and on

Representatives from Special Olympics and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Georgia were on hand to receive the $75,000 check awarded to each charity from the inaugural McGladrey Classic. Then, the kids got a special treat and a chance to compete in Wii golf on teams led by Davis, Zach and Heath. The winners – Davis’ team! Let’s hope this is a harbinger of good things to come for the U.S. in the next Ryder Cup.

The McGladrey Classic Returns to Sea Island

We’re just days away now from our next event at Sea Island! Team McGladrey members Zach Johnson and Davis Love III (both of whom are Sea Island residents) and Heath Slocum (winner of the inaugural McGladrey Classic) will be joining us and RSM McGladrey President C.E. Andrews to present checks for funds raised during last year’s event to Special Olympics and the Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Georgia. Representatives from both nonprofits will be on-hand to accept the donations on behalf of their organizations, and to help celebrate an exciting announcement that Davis will make on March 28. We’ll be sharing updates from the event via Twitter (@McGladrey) – hope you’re following us so you can hear the “breaking news!”

As usual, Team McGladrey members have been busy this past week, and have lots planned over the coming week. Here’s a quick peek at a few of the highlights:

Zach Johnson and his family enjoyed a few days at Universal Studios over spring break last week, and they snapped on picture of a “pooped” son Will that we just have to share – you can find it here.

Zach, along with fellow Team McGladrey Member Chris DiMarco, are joining 118 other PGA TOUR professionals including Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia, for the 2011 Arnold Palmer Invitational at the Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando. (We hear that Chris is particularly excited to be playing the course, which is one of his favorites, and even more excited that he’ll be able to sleep in his own bed throughout the event.)

Natalie Gulbis recently attended a Fight Night charity event, and posted this nice twitpic of her and some of her LPGA TOUR friends on Twitter.

REMINDER: You can now sign up for volunteer opportunities at this year’s McGladrey Classic at Sea Island in October. Interested? Do it now! This year’s event is already shaping up to be every bit as “top notch” as the inaugural event.

This Week with Team McGladrey

While he isn't a member of Team McGladrey, we'd like to begin this week's update by congratulating Rory Sabbatini for earning his sixth PGA TOUR win at The Honda Classic last weekend!

This week, Team McGladrey Member Chris DiMarco is playing in the Puerto Rico Open (March 7 – 13) at the Trump International Golf Club. Other PGA TOUR players participating include Stewart Cink, Angel Cabrera, John Daly and Boo Weekley.

And speaking of Chris, apparently his 15-year-old son Cristian is becoming quite the golfer, as well. In fact, Chris tweeted this week that Cristian (who is a “leftie,” by the way) is better than he was at that age.

Also this week, Team McGladrey Member Natalie was treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the garage by Kevin Harvick’s Bud Team at the NASCAR race in Las Vegas. Take a look. Her next tournament? The R.R. Donnelley Founders Cup at the Wildfire Golf Club at the J.W. Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa.

Team McGladrey member Zach Johnson is competing this week at the World Golf Championships – Cadillac Championship at the TPC Blue Monster at Doral in Doral, Florida. We wish him the best of luck!

And Team McGladrey Member Davis Love reminded his Twitter followers this week that they can purchase tickets for a chance to win his Orange County Chopper. Learn more. Ride safely!

Finally, we were excited to hear this week that the 2014 Special Olympics USA National Competition was awarded to Princeton, New Jersey. Congratulations, New Jersey, on hosting such a wonderful event, and a great team of athletes!

Questions about – and a really cute picture from – Team McGladrey

Team McGladrey Member and 2012 U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Davis Love III visited PGA of America headquarters earlier this week where he talked about the Ryder Cup and, among other things, the career that he would likely have pursued had he not gone into golf. Any guesses on how he thinks he’d be earning a living if he weren’t a PGA TOUR professional?

Team McGladrey Member Natalie Gulbis returned from Singapore earlier this week. Natalie tweeted that while she enjoys traveling, it’s always good to get back home. She also mentioned that she enjoyed a couple of Academy Award-nominated movies on the return flight. Which movies do you think she watched?

Team McGladrey’s Chris DiMarco and Davis Love III are playing in the 2011 Honda Classic this week at the PGA National Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. We’re pulling for you, Chris and Davis!

And Team McGladrey Member Zach Johnson has been so busy on Twitter lately that the system kicked him out, (Who knew there was a limit on the number of Tweets you can post in a day?) but not before he posted this ADORABLE picture of his son Will getting a haircut (after being bribed with candy).

Finally, for all of those 2010 McGladrey Classic volunteers: You can sign up to help with the 2011 event now, (scheduled for Oct. 13 – 16). Do it! We'd love to see you at Sea Island again!
