The ABCs of Golf

While these might not be “the” ABCs of golf, we have a few things we’re referring to as this week’s “ABCs of golf:” an Accolade, a Birthday and a Commercial. And because he’s so near-and-dear to our hearts and since today is the actual “big day,” we’d like to start with the Birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Team McGladrey Member Zach Johnson, who is celebrating his 35th today!

Next up – the Commercial: Team McGladrey Member Natalie Gulbis is starring in a new LPGA TOUR ad campaign, which began airing this week in conjunction with The Golf Channel’s coverage of the season-opening Honda LPGA Thailand event. Other LPGA TOUR professionals featured include reigning U.S. Women’s Open Champion Paula Creamer, three-time TOUR winner I.K. Kim, Rookie-of-the-Year Azahara Munoz and two-time major champion Cristie Kerr. Natalie’s “Autographs” spot features her signing some pretty interesting things. Take a look.

Finally, the Accolade: We’re closing this week’s update by congratulating Aaron Baddeley on winning the 2011 Northern Trust Open, and by reminding our 2010 McGladrey Classic volunteers that they can sign up now to volunteer during this year’s event, (scheduled for Oct. 13 – 16).

What would you like to read here next week? Let us know, and we’ll do our best to accommodate your suggestions.

From Caddyshack to The McGladrey Classic

Congratulations to D.A. Points and Bill Murray on winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am! Now, the man known for his legendary role as greenskeeper Carl Spackler in the movie “Caddyshack” is also known as a legend on the course!

Team McGladrey members Davis Love III and Chris DiMarco enjoyed the tournament, as well. In fact, take a look at this cool picture of Chris with actor Kurt Russell, whom he was paired with during the event.

Team McGladrey Member Natalie Gulbis was recently in Malaysia’s Paya Beach. It was 100 degrees while she was there. How’s THAT for a break from the winter snow and ice we’ve been experiencing here in the U.S?

Team McGladrey Member Zach Johnson posed for a picture on Valentine’s Day wearing the Colonial plaid jacket. How many colors do you think are in the jacket? (We’re guessing about 16.)

Other big news this week in the world of golf: Paula Creamer committed to the inaugural R.R. Conelley LPGA Founders Cup, which will be played at the J.W. Marriott Desert Ridge Resort and Spa in Phoenix. The tournament will give $1 million to charity.

Speaking of charitable causes, we ran across this powerful video on Twitter earlier in the week and, given our support of Special Olympics, thought you, our readers, would enjoy its educational and inspirational message. Click here to hear Soeren Palumbo talk about the power of love.

That’s this week’s update, but remember…if you volunteered during the 2010 McGladrey Classic at Sea Island and you’re interested in helping during this year’s event, which is scheduled for Oct. 13 – 16, you can sign up now.

Big Stars Raising Big Money for Charity at Pebble Beach...and in Boston!

We’re pulling for Team McGladrey members Chris DiMarco and Davis Love III this week as they play in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (Feb. 7 – 13). Davis won the event in 2001 and again in 2003. We’d love to see a “repeat performance,” Davis!

In addition to Chris and Davis, Stuart Appleby, Hunter Mahan, Rocco Mediate, Phil Mickelson and a host of other PGA TOUR professionals will be joined by Michael Bolton, Craig T. Nelson, Drew Brees, Bill Murray, George Lopez and other famous “aspiring” professional golfers, making this star-studded event a “must see,” in our book! You can bet we’ll be tuning into The Golf Channel to watch.

Regardless of who wins on the course, though, the real winners of the event are the hundreds of nonprofit organization that benefit from the proceeds of the tournament through the Monterey Peninsula Foundation.

Speaking of supporting nonprofit organizations, we’d like to give a quick nod to the McGladrey members of our Boston office, and thank them for their recent support a number of nonprofits in their area, including Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, The Genesis Fund, Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries, The Jewish National Fund, The Lenny Zakim Fund, Boston Police Activities League and Special Olympics. (You can see a few of their smiling faces from a recent event in the photos at the top of this post.)

And now, a bit more on Team McGladrey:

Team McGladrey Member Zach Johnson and his wife Kim saw the movie True Grit this week. We’re not sure about Kim, but Zach gave it quite an endorsement on Twitter.

Team McGladrey Member Natalie Gulbis just returned to the U.S. after spending a few days in Mexico with sponsors, MasterCard and TaylorMade. Natalie says that golf is really increasing in popularity in Mexico, and she now feels the need to brush up on her Spanish. She also managed to squeeze in a little shopping and a much-needed stop at Starbucks while she was there.

Finally, we’d like to remind you that if you volunteered during the 2010 McGladrey Classic at Sea Island and you’re interested in helping during this year’s event, which is scheduled for Oct. 13 – 16, you can sign up now.

Congratulations, Updates and Opportunities

On behalf of Team McGladrey, we’d like to congratulate Lorena Ochoa, winner of the Golf Writers Association’s Bartlett Award for her work with underprivileged children. The award is given each year to a professional golfer for his or her unselfish contributions to the betterment of society. Previous recipients include Ernie Els, (2010), Tiger Woods, Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus. Congratulations, Lorena – well-deserved!

What’s up with Team McGladrey this week? Well, here’s a quick glance:

• Chris DiMarco and Davis Love III are playing in the 2011 Waste Management Phoenix Open. (Go, Chris and Davis!)
• Zach Johnson and his wife Kim celebrated their eighth wedding anniversary skiing in Vail this week. Their actual anniversary is next Tues., Feb. 8, though so if you’d like to send your anniversary wishes to the happy couple, there’s still time. Post them here, and we’ll pass them along.
• Natalie posted some recent practice videos on YouTube. You can check those out here.

And we’re really excited that Feb. 1 marked the first day for 2010 McGladrey Classic volunteers to register for 2011. If you helped last year, and you’re interested in supporting the 2011 event (Oct. 13-16), sign up here.

Check back next week for MORE on Team McGladrey and The McGladrey Classic…it’ll be here before we know it!
